Responsibilities

The diagnostic medical Sonographer provides diagnostic ultrasound tests for patients in the Maternal Fetal Medicine setting. The diagnostic medical Sonographer works independently and with other members of the healthcare team to provide comprehensive care to pregnant women.

  • Escorts patient and family to and from examination room.
  • Explains exam to patient and family prior to the commencement of the test to assure cooperation and optimum test results.
  • Acquires anatomical, pathological, and/or physiological data for interpretation by a physician.
  • Maintains patient charts and records, and records/processes sonographic data and other pertinent observations made during the procedure for presentation to the interpreting physician.
  • Creates a preliminary report for physician review/signature.
  • Reviews studies with physicians.
  • Assists physician with procedures such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling.
  • Codes appropriate for services performed.
  • Maintains proper operation of the ultrasound equipment.
  • Recognizes equipment malfunctions and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Maintains laundry for examination rooms.
  • Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of ultrasound supplies.
  • Follows the accredited laboratory protocols for obtaining two-dimensional images, color flow, Doppler, and m-mode where applicable.
  • Follows and complies with universal precautions and OSHA standards.
  • Follows and complies with safety and security training.
  • Rotates as needed to cover Sonographer absences.
  • Performs related and other assigned duties as directed.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year experience as an ultrasound technician working in OB/GYN and/or MFM setting. 

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  •  Must have at least two (2) years in Allied Health Educational Program and one (1) year on-the-job- training in ultrasonography, or completion of an approved ultrasonography educational program.
  • Must have American Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) and certified in OB/GYN.
  • Fetal echo certification preferred but not required. Must be willing to obtain fetal echo within 12 months of hire date. 
  • CPR certification required.
  • Must provide evidence of continuing education credits to fulfill accreditation requirements.
