Responsibilities

  • Escorts patient and family to and from examination room.
  • Explains exam to patient and family prior to the commencement of the test to assure cooperation and optimum test results.
  • Acquires anatomical, pathological, and/or physiological data for interpretation by a physician.
  • Maintains patient charts and records, and records/processes sonographic data and other pertinent observations made during the procedure for presentation to the interpreting physician.
  • Creates a preliminary report for physician review/signature.
  • Reviews studies with physicians.
  • Assists physician with procedures such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling.
  • Codes appropriate for services performed.
  • Maintains proper operation of the ultrasound equipment.
  • Recognizes equipment malfunctions and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Maintains laundry for examination rooms.
  • Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of ultrasound supplies.
  • Follows the accredited laboratory protocols for obtaining two-dimensional images, color flow, Doppler, and m-mode where applicable.
  • Follows and complies with universal precautions and OSHA standards.
  • Follows and complies with safety and security training.
  • Rotates as needed to cover Sonographer absences.
  • Performs related and other assigned duties as directed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum six months experience as an ultrasound technician working in OB/GYN and/or MFM setting preferred.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Skilled in operating ultrasound equipment.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Graduate of an accredited sonography program with a degree in ultrasonography or equivalent.
  • ARDMS OB/GYN certified or eligible
  • Fetal echo certification or eligible to obtain with 12 months of hire. Fetal echo experience preferred or will be provided. Participates in staff development, in-service workshops, and educational activities. Participates in professional development activities and meetings.
  • Completion of a program containing OB/GYN ultrasonography.
  • CPR certification required.
  • Satisfactory completion of one of the following; at least two (2) years in Allied Health Educational Program and one (1) year on-the-job- training in ultrasonography, or completion of an approved ultrasonography educational program.
  • Maintain or be eligible for certification as an American Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS).
  • Must provide evidence of continuing education credits to fulfill accreditation requirements.
